Resetting a breaker repeatedly does not solve the fault; the reason the protective device operates should be identified.
Common causes
- Too many high-power appliances on one circuit
- A faulty appliance or damaged cable
- Moisture in a socket or connection
- A short circuit or earth leakage
- Heat caused by a loose connection
Safe first checks
Switch off and unplug appliances. Do not energise the circuit if you notice heat, sparks, a burning smell or contact with water. Note which appliance or activity was present when the breaker tripped.
What not to do
Installing a higher-rated breaker, bypassing protection or working inside an open panel is dangerous. Main-supply and meter faults may be the responsibility of the authorised utility.

The breaker label, affected rooms, appliances in use and a photograph taken from a safe distance can help diagnosis.
